DAILYKENN.com -- Fake accusations of racism just got expensive. Oberlin College is facing a $44-million settlement after a bakery was accused of racism.

Considering the massive funds Oberlin retains in its 1,700 endowment funds, the $44-million will have little impact on the school.

According to https://www.oberlin.edu/investment/assets
Nearly all of Oberlin’s 1,700 endowed funds are invested within the General Investment Pool. The College’s General Investment Pool was $887.0 million at June 30, 2018, versus $819.9 million at June 30, 2017, a $67.1 million increase.

A jury has awarded $33.2 million in punitive damages to Gibson’s Bakery, whose owners claimed Ohio’s Oberlin College and an administrator hurt their business and libeled them during a dispute over a shoplifting episode that triggered protests and allegations of racism.

The Chronicle-Telegram reported the same jury awarded Gibson’s business and family members more than $11 million in actual or compensatory damages, bringing the total award to more than $44 million.
