POLAND’S ruling eurosceptics are on course to win the country’s regional elections according to exit polls ahead of the official count today. The Law and Justice (PiS) party have made marginal gains and according to exit polls remain the largest party with 32.3 percent of the vote.
The leading opposition party, Civic Platform, won 24.7 percent with the Polish People’s Party taking 16.6 percent.
But the right-wing party was defeated in the capital Warsaw after the PiS candidate was beaten by pro-Eu campaigner from the Civic Platform party.
Rafał Trzaskowski won the capital with 54.1 percent over Deputy Justice Minister Patryk Jaki.
Tensions between the Poland and the EU have been heightened in recent days after the European Court of Justice ordered Poland to backtrack on reforms to the Supreme Court.
