A large fight Saturday resulted in the arrest of two 24-year-old subjects - a situation that may have been worse if reports of shots fired during the melee were true, according to the South Haven Police Department.
Police were initially called on a report of a fight with shots fired in the area between Kalamazoo and Cartwright streets, but later determined the cacophonous pops heard during the fight were most likely fireworks, said South Haven Police Chief Natalie Thompson.
Thompson said her department found no evidence of a shooting nor shots fired at the scene, but the investigation is ongoing.
Both 24-year-old subjects, one from Covert and another from South Haven, were arrested for aggravated assault, resisting arrest and obstructing officers, Thompson added. A substance suspected to be heroin was also recovered at the scene, and felony drug charges are pending.
At least one of the suspects is currently being lodged at the Van Buren County Jail pending arraignment. The other was taken to an area hospital to seek treatment for injuries sustained in the fight, Thompson said.
Police were dispatched at around 8:45 p.m. Saturday to the intersection of Kalamazoo and Cartwright in South Haven on a report of a fight with shots fired. Upon arrival, police found multiple subjects fighting. WWMT reports that at least 40 people were engaged in the fight.
Upon arrival, officers said they found several groups of people at the Milkovich Middle School.
Maple Heights police were assisted by officers from Garfield Heights, Bedford Heights, Oakwood Village and the Bedford Police Departments.
First responders said they found Darnez Canion, 20, lying in the drive of the school with a gunshot wound. Officers rendered aid and performed CPR until the Maple Heights Fire Department arrived on scene, according to police.
Canion was taken to the Bedford Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.
Two people were taken into custody. Charges are pending, according to police who are conducting an investigation.
