August 19, 2016 -- Johnnie L. Sampson, 32, of Hoopeston, was taken into custody at 1 p.m. Monday in connection to the murder of a Danville, Illinois woman.

Mary Thompson was fatally shot while driving on August 5, 2016.

Police arrested a Hoopeston man Monday in connection to the murder of a Danville woman in early August.
Director of Public Safety Larry Thomason said in a press release that Johnnie L. Sampson, 32, of Hoopeston, was taken into custody at 1 p.m. Monday in connection to the murder.

“Danville police had obtained a murder warrant of arrest on Aug. 11 for Mr. Sampson,” Thomason said. “Working with Hoopeston Police Department, U.S. Marshal’s Service and VMEG officers, Danville detectives arrested Mr. Sampson in the 1200 block of Daisy Lane in Hoopeston. There was no resistance with the arrest.”

He said there was no bond on the arrest warrant, and Sampson remained in custody of the Vermilion County Sheriff's department on four counts of murder.

Thomason added that Mary Thompson was shot as she drove in the area of Clyman and Fowler streets on Aug. 5, and their investigation into the murder case continues. He also said detectives have other persons of interest they were focusing on.
