August 6, 2016 -- David Clint Watson is dead.

The 27-year-old Gastonia, North Carolina man was murdered in Gaston County.

Arrested for the crime is Naijii Salik Boyd, 22, who was charged with first-degree murder.

Watson was fatally shot.

Boyd is black. Watson was white.

On Saturday, someone called 911 around 10:45 a.m. Authorities found Watson’s body on the ground near 122 McAbee Lane, near the intersection of Dameron and Kiser roads. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have accused Naijii Salik Boyd, who turns 23 in about two weeks, of the killing. Boyd was arrested in Burlington around 3 p.m. Saturday. He was moved into the Gaston County Jail around 1 a.m. Sunday and charged with first-degree murder.

Police say Boyd left the scene in a car with other people from the McAbee address. They are still determining if those people were taken against their will. If so, Boyd could face more charges.

Amanda Fortenberry said Boyd is a friend and the father of her 5-month-old niece. She believes the police have exaggerated the situation, she said.

“This isn’t like him,” Fortenberry said. “I cannot picture Naijii doing something like that. He’s a great guy.”
