March 19, 2016 -- A woman was murdered by asphyxia in Amarillo, Texas.

Tyrone Titus, 45, and Dana Atkins, 42, were found dead Jan. 28 inside a house they apparently shared.

Police concluded the deaths were a murder-suicide.

Preliminary autopsy results were inconclusive, and rumors were swirling around the neighborhood that carbon monoxide poisoning could have been the cause of death. However, final autopsy results show Atkins died of asphyxia due to chest compression and ligature strangulation, according to a news release.

Results also show that Titus died as a result of acute ethylene glycol intoxication. Ethylene glycol is commonly known as antifreeze.

“Basically, he drank antifreeze,” Potter-Randall Special Crimes Unit Coordinator Lt. Erick Bohannon said.

Evidence discovered during the autopsy also revealed Atkins died several hours before Titus, authorities said.

With the determination that Atkins’ death was a homicide, the total number of homicides investigated by Amarillo police this year climbs to four.
