Police say a drug dealer has been charged with the March murder of a man in Gulfport.

Jeffrey Stephens, 25, has been charged in connection with the March 2015 death of Michael Dayton.

According to Gulfport police, Dayton, 41, was found suffering from gunshot wounds in the 1400 block of 52nd Street S. He was taken to Bayfront Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.

Investigators said it appears as though Dayton was trying to purchase crack cocaine when he was shot.

Officials said Stephens, who sold illegal narcotics to Dayton, was identified as the suspect, and that witness statements corroborated physical evidence that indicated he was the shooter.

Stephens is currently serving prison time on unrelated felony charges. He is now facing an additional charge of murder.
