A dual murder case against a local man accused of killing his wife and stepson last year will proceed to trial.

According to District Attorney Kevin Buchanan, “the case is moving forward.”

Steven Adair, 35, faces two counts of first-degree murder in the stabbing deaths of 41-year-old Crystal Sue (Therrien) Adair and her 23-year-old son, Charles Edward Lee, and an additional count of aggravated assault and battery with a weapon stemming from the non-fatal stabbing of Crystal Adair’s 15-year-old daughter. The girl was able to escape from the home after being stabbed.

The case has thus far been an eventful one as especially after prosecutors announced they will seek the death penalty in the case, necessitating a change of attorneys.

After it was postponed several times, Adair had formal arraignment in the case on July 7. A date of Sept. 22 has now been set for disposition.

The case began when police responded to a reported stabbing in the 500 block of Northwest Sooner Drive around 11:46 p.m. on Sept. 3, 2014, where they found Lee in the front yard, dead of “apparent stab wounds,” records show.

The 15-year-old reportedly told officers that her mother had been stabbed and that Steven Adair was still in the house. The girl reportedly said that her mother was “stabbed by Steven Adair during a domestic disturbance,” that she (the girl) had been stabbed and that she saw her brother, Lee, stabbed in the front yard, according to a police affidavit filed in the case.

Two neighbors reportedly told police that they saw the girl running from the home, saying that Steven Adair was “killing” her mother. The witnesses further said they saw Steven Adair stab Lee, which “apparently caused his death,” the affidavit states.

Police say that in a videotaped interview with Steven Adair, he “admitted to stabbing his wife,” saying that “she had told him that she wanted a divorce.” He further reportedly admitted that he stabbed Lee “during a scuffle outside the residence.”

In court documents filed on Feb. 27, District Attorney Kevin Buchanan said his office will seek the death penalty against Adair.

Steven Adair was previously bound over on the charges following a preliminary hearing in January and remains in the Washington County Detention Center on $1 million bond.

  1. Mama's mudsharking put her family in danger and cost her son his life. Maybe the daughter will have learned a lesson in race realism.
