August 24, 2015 -- The individual accused of murdering a Bronx homeless shelter director has been ordered by a court to provide DNA.

West Spruill was arrested for killing the mother-of-two Ana Charle, 36, in April.

A manager of a Bronx homeless shelter was shot and killed around the corner from her facility -- possibly by an ex-con tenant, authorities said Monday.

Ana Charle, 36, was blasted in the head on a secluded spot on E. 237th St. and Bullard Ave. in Wakefield, just a few paces from a set of railroad tracks and the Bronx River, at about 5:45 p.m., officials said. She was rushed to Montefiore Medical Center, where she died.

Suspected shooter West Spruill, 39, ran into a car wash and was caught near the scene.

"There was a shot, then some more shots. Then a final shot," said one witness, who wished not to be named. "He came running up the hill and ran down the street into the car wash, where the police arrested him."

A .40-caliber handgun was found in his backpack, officials said.

Spruill was charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon. His arraignment was pending Monday night.

Charle ran the Project Renewal Shelter on Bronx Blvd. — about a block from where she was shot.

Spruill served 11 years in prison after being convicted of attempted murder and assault in 1994, according to court records. He was released from prison in 2005.

A police source echoed statements from Bronx prosecutors that the killing was planned, as a piece of paper with the victim’s license plate number written out was found inside a bag in Spruill’s car.

The killer, who shot the victim three times with a .40 caliber handgun, placed several plastic ties in the bag before returning to stalk Charle, the source said.

Community leaders made their pitch for a bigger security presence four months before Monday night’s savage killing during a December meeting with Department of Homeless Services officials — but nothing was done.

“I’m not saying anything that DHS had done could have saved this woman,” said City Council member Andrew Cohen (D-Bronx). “But I don’t have any confidence that DHS is taking these concerns seriously.”
