The man accused of killing and kidnapping a 25-year-old Mount Pleasant man after they met to discuss the sale of a pickup truck listed on Craigslist unexpectedly pleaded guilty Wednesday, authorities said. Jquan Scott, 21, pleaded guilty to the murder, kidnapping and armed robbery of Alex Apps on Oct. 3, 2013, according to the 9th Circuit Solicitor's Office. Scott's trial was set for June 1 but a statement from the solicitor's office said he changed his plea to guilty during a routine pre-trial conference Wednesday.
Judge Kristi Harrington accepted Scott's plea but deferred sentencing to obtain a pre-sentencing report and to give Apps' family an opportunity to address the court.
Authorities say Apps, a College of Charleston student trying to sell his pickup truck to help pay for college, agreed to meet Scott and co-defendant Isaac Rommel Williams at the Hardee's on Spring Street after he posted the truck on Craigslist.
Investigators say Scott shot Apps in the head and then the two men dumped his body in a wooded area near McGrath Darby Boulevard in Mount Pleasant. His pickup truck was gone. Police say Scott was driving Apps truck when they first interviewed him about the shooting.
“Seeing one of these kids actually driving his truck was disgusting, honestly, and for such a great person with such a bright future ahead of him - he was getting ready for law school - it was terrible," said Andrew Brennan, Apps' roommate during their freshman year at the College of Charleston.
Scott faces 30 years to life on the murder charge, a minimum of 10 years for armed robbery, a maximum sentence of 30 years for kidnapping and a maximum sentence of five years for possession of a firearm during a violent crime. Williams is expected to face trial later this summer.
