73-year-old Charles Azim was arrested for stabbing Shirley Barone and Penelope Spencer and has been charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.
News reports say the elderly Azim lives in a Pittsburgh area housing project called Springdale Manor. Allegheny County's Housing Authority said it had previously attempted to evict Azim.
White liberals choose not to live in government housing projects.
The crime occurred June 27, 2014
Friday's incident began with an argument between Barone and Azim around 7 p.m. in Barone's apartment, Allegheny County police wrote in a criminal complaint. When Baro ne fled to Spencer's apartment, Azim followed and stabbed Barone then Spencer. Azim punched Linda Simmers, a monitor on the sixth-floor of the building, in the head as she went to investigate, police added.
Court records show that Azim has a lengthy criminal record and was once sentenced to from eight to 16 years in prison on aggravated assault and related offenses for a May 2000 incident.
Azim had lived in the building for about seven years, said housing authority police Chief Mike Vogel, and passed a background check that looks back about five years.
The authority had tried to evict Azim when he was accused of making threats against a female resident, Vogel said. But during a hearing, Vogel said, the woman acted as a character witness for Azim, so the authority was unable to evict him.
Neighbors said Azim had been suffering ongoing health problems. They said at least one of the women involved in the incident helped care for him.
