After 15 minutes of knocking, the suspect apparently was satisfied that no one was home and crashed open the door.
That sound wakened Jonathan Haith. He grabbed his AR-15 from under the bed, crouched as he walked down a hallway, then spotted a tall "black gentleman" with a gun.
The invader fired first, but missed. Haith returned fire and connected, shooting the invader in the stomach.
Police apprehended the suspect and an accomplice who was waiting in a car nearby.
Arrested is 23-year-old Gregory Johnson who was reported to be hospitalized in critical condition.
The home invasion occurred during the mid-morning hours of May 12, 2014 in Henderson, North Carolina.
