The remains of John R. Neff lay in a yard for six hours before anyone called police.

Neff, a white maintenance man, was helping a black family in Beaumont, Texas where he was murdered.

The victim was stabbed multiple times, police say.

Arrested is 17-year-old Samuel Thomas, IV. Police say Thomas covered the body with a sheet after the murder, then stole his victim's truck.

Neff was discovered when the grandson of Theresa Jackson, who lives at the house, went out to play. The confessed killer is Jackson's son.

Reports say the women surrendered the butcher knife from her kitchen that police believe is the murder weapon. She indicated her son had a history of mental disorders.

Neff's daughter, Haley, had just returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan when her father's remains were discovered.

Neff was 59 year old.

The murdered occurred on Monday, April 7, 2014.
