Will they call it a 'stray bullet'? Will they trivialize his murder as being in the wrong place at the wrong time?
Nicholas was, in fact, at the right place at the right time.
• The right place
He was in the back yard of a private residents.
Nicholas was enjoying a quiet party with his college friends. He was not roaming the streets of St. Louis, as were his killers, engaged in rascality.
He was a student at the St. Louis College of Pharmacy.
College is a right place to be for a bright twenty-year old. Nicholas was learning to benefit humanity with a productive career in health care. He was on his way to becoming a pharmacist. He was not engaged in illegal drug trafficking that damages the lives of others.
• The right time
Age twenty is the right time to be in college. It is not the right time to be roaming the streets with guns.
Some would cite white privilege for allowing Nicholas to be in college while his killers were denied access to such opportunities due to ethnicity.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
Womb-to-tomb government programs such as Head Start, No Child Left Behind, and Affirmative Action were created to assure that all Americans would have equal educational opportunity. Welfare programs exist to diminish the economic disparities purported to hold back children from being in the right place at the right time.
Those who shot and killed Nicholas have no excuse and no one to blame but themselves.
How tragic that those who are in the wrong place at the wrong time are taking so many lives of those who are in the right place at the right time.
Expect no national media outcry as was heard when Michael Dunn protected himself, his companion, and their property by shooting an aggressive black teen in Jacksonville, Florida. Rather, expect this senseless murder to be swept under the media carpet and forgotten.
Nicholas was killed March 1, 2014 in St. Louis, Missouri.
