Carlton Lamont Pringle was shot after pointing a 9 mm Hi-Point pistol at a police officer, authorities say.

Pringle's parents say the shooting was unnecessary because the teen didn't actually point the pistol. They are suing the North Charleston Police Department.

Police were responding to emergency calls March 25, 2012 reporting gunfire. Pringle's hairstyle fit the description given police. The teen was 17 at the time.

Pringle, now 19, is expected to be tried April 7 on charges of unlawfully carrying and possessing a firearm, pointing a firearm and resisting arrest with a deadly weapon. He is free on bail.
