A SWAT team showed to arrest Brossart prompting a 16-hour standoff. The drone was used to locate Brossart and his sons allowed the cops to make the arrest. (Another report referred to it as a summer-long standoff.)
In an effort to toss the case, Brossart's lawyer contended the drone was "dispatched without judicial approval or a warrant".
A judge and jury disagreed.
Brossart was found guilty of terrorizing police and but was acquitted of theft and criminal mischief. He was sentenced to three years in prison. All but three months were suspended. His sons got probation.
If I understand correctly...
• One can get away with cattle rustling, but messing with a SWAT team will get you thrown in jail.
• Grand Forks is a small city of about 53,000. Why does a small city need a SWAT team?
• Wouldn't it have more practical if the owner of the cows sued Brossart? (Maybe he did.)
