Ride with Pride is a taxpayer funded effort to encourage homosexuals to ride Amtrak.
Some would say it's wrong for the government to encourage an immoral lifestyle. That objection usually comes from the religious right where fundamentalists cling to a literal interpretation of the Bible.
Some would say it's wrong for the government to encourage a dangerous lifestyle. Studies reveal that the lifespan of gay men is significantly shorter than their non-gay counterparts. HIV and other behavior-related health issues are to blame. It's akin to encouraging alcoholics, they say.
Still others would complain that gays among us presents a public health hazard. They note that gays have a higher than average rate of HIV. Consequently the risk of acquiring the disease through body fluids is significantly higher when gays are present than when gays are absent. These would prefer Amtrak actually discourage gays from hopping aboard.
Thoughtful people would object by noting that it's wrong for tax dollars to support a particular group. Discrimination in favor of one group necessarily discriminates against all others. One wonders if Amtrak will spend taxpayer dollars targeting other groups such as polygamists, people over age 90, dog owners, Christian fundamentalists, Tea Party members, gun rights activists, Hasidic Jews, redheads, redheaded Hasidic Jews -- if there are any, or homophobes.
Stating "gays welcome" implies all non-gays are not welcome. Liberals have difficulty understanding that abstract concept. The exception, of course, would be the statement, "Christians welcome." In that case they would go ballistic, feign discrimination, unfurl accusations of hate, and file a church-state lawsuit.
Ultimately the strategy is not to welcome gays to Amtrak, but to brainwash the rest of us into viewing homosexuality as a legitimate, normal and healthy lifestyle. And even if it were all (or any) of those things, is it the government's responsibility to influence us?
