DAILYKENN.com -- Louisiana black lawmaker Barbara Norton suggests the Declaration of Independence was racist.
See video below
It was written at a time when slavery was practiced in the colonies.
• Norton is apparently ignorant of the fact that the first legal slave holder in American history was a black colonist named Anthony Johnson.
• She also appears to be ignorant of the fact that, in 1830, there were 3,775 free blacks who owned black slave laborers in South Carolina alone.
• She is also apparently unaware that thousands of free black Americans owned slave labor. In fact, the largest slave holder in South Carolina in 1860 was a black plantation owner named William Ellison.
Norton is opposing legislation that would require government school children to quote for the historical document.
She claims that 'only Caucasians were free'.
• She is apparently ignorant of the fact that Crispus Attucks, a free black colonist, is considered the first American to be killed in the American Revolutionary War.
