Six people were shot within a span of about an hour and a half, including an incident in Lawndale that left three wounded and a man shot about a block away from a police station.
The fatal shooting happened about 11:05 a.m. in the 6500 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue in the Woodlawn neighborhood, said Officer Bari Lemmon, a Chicago police spokeswoman. A man who had suffered gunshot wounds was pronounced dead at the scene, Lemmon said. He was identified as Maurice K. Cavin of the 7400 block of South King Drive, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. The circumstances leading up to the slaying were not immediately available.
