A Lake Worth man is facing first-degree murder charges in the death of his girlfriend on Dec. 31.
Deputies from the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office were called to investigate after a grandmother reported that she had not heard from her granddaughter, Lauren White, since New Year's Eve.
She told authorities that she had made several attempts to contact her by phone and text message and had received no response, which was concerning since she typically spoke with her granddaughter daily, an arrest report said.
The woman told authorities that White lived in apartment with her boyfriend, Yusef Jamal Green, 37, of Lake Worth.
She told deputies that she went to the apartment on Jan. 3 and found White's car not in its usual parking spot. She looked through a window and saw a burning candle inside the home, the report said.
She immediately contacted authorities.
Deputies entered the home through an open window and found blood splattered on the floor and walls and White wrapped in a sheet, bedding covers, pillows and a rug behind the living-room couch, the report said.
The medical examiner determined that White died of a laceration to her neck.
Investigators found candles, air fresheners, an open bottle of Clorox bleach and cleaning solution around the apartment, which they said were used in an attempt to conceal the odor of the decomposing body.
A notebook entry was found in the bedroom saying that White was unfaithful in their relationship, the report said.
White's grandmother told deputies that despite being in a relationship with Green, White was married to a Romanian man, identified as Alexandru Nicolae. She said the arranged marriage was a business deal for Nicolae to become an American citizen.
White was being paid $500 a month by Nicolae for the deal, the report said. Her relationship with Nicolae was kept a secret from Green, according to her grandmother.
She said that Green had recently learned of their marriage after finding paperwork and threatened to tell immigration authorities about their fraudulent marriage if White tried to throw him out the the apartment, the report said.
The Flagler County Sheriff's Office was alerted on Jan. 5 that Bunnell police had located White's 2010 Honda parked behind a bar in Flager County.
Two of Green's family members told deputies that Green told them he had "messed up" and tried to kill himself. Green was then taken to the hospital.
Police executed an arrest warrant for Green at the hospital.
According to authorities, Green's DNA profile matched the evidence collected from the crime scene.
