A Spring Lake, North Carolina, Indian American mother has been jailed on a felony charge after her 5-week-old baby girl sustained multiple fractures to her ribs, both ankles and a femur, AP reported.
Multiple media outlets report 25-year-old Rinkuben Patel was charged Dec. 15 with child abuse inflicting serious physical injury.
The Spring Lake Police Department said in a news release that the baby was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center the morning of Nov. 25 after having seizures. Doctors determined the baby was experiencing brain bleeding, and she was transferred to Duke Medical Center, where other staff discovered signs of physical abuse that included multiple fractures, reported AP.
On Nov. 26, a social worker contacted Spring Lake Police about the baby's injuries.
Police say the baby has been released from the hospital and is in custody of the Cumberland County Department of Social Services.
According to an abc11.com report, police said emergency services technicians responded to the family's apartment regarding a call of the baby having seizures about 9:30 p.m. on Nov. 25. It remains unclear who made the emergency call.
Patel was taken to the Cumberland County Detention Center under a $10,000 secured bond.
Police confirm that Patel, her husband, and their child lived in the apartment with another couple. They are local business owners who employed the Patels. The other adults living in the apartment are not considered suspects.
"I have sympathy for any infant and the children who can't defend themselves," said Curtis Worthy, who rents the apartment to the Patels, as quoted in the abc11.com report.
According to a report on inquisitr.com, after Patel appeared in court Dec. 16 with an interpreter, because the young mother speaks only limited English, a judge raised the bond to $500,000.
Prosecutors also revealed in court that Patel has been in the U.S. for about two years, entering on an apparently valid student visa, reported inquisitr.com. But she has never attended school in this country, the prosecutors said.
