A Gadsden man charged with capital murder in the September 2011 shooting death of a Papa John’s assistant manager pleaded guilty Tuesday, according to online court records.
Brandon Vontez Hawkins, 24, was sentenced to 35 years for shooting Barbara Exum while robbing the Oxford restaurant. His sentence will run at the same time as his sentences for a second-degree assault charge and first-degree robbery charge related to the shooting, according to records.
Hawkins pleaded guilty to a separate robbery charge in January for an incident that occurred a week after Exum’s death.
Donquavious Russell, 21, was also charged with capital murder in the Exum shooting. Russell is set to go to trial January 25, according to records.
