An Oakland man has been arrested in connection with last month's fatal shooting of an East Oakland ice-cream vendor, police said Wednesday.
Oakland police said they expect to formally charge 23-year-old Joevan Lopez later this week, and have referred the case to the Alameda County District Attorney's office.
The ice-cream vendor, 45-year-old Jasvir Singh, was fatally shot at about 4:32 p.m. Oct. 3 while inside his ice cream van on Peach Street, between 92nd and 94th avenues.
The gunman, who police identified as Lopez, ran through backyards after the shooting. Police did not release information about when Lopez was arrested, but he had been identified as a suspect shortly after the shooting.
Singh's death last month devastated residents in the East Oakland neighborhood. Singh and his van were a familiar sight, and his frozen treats a were popular among adults children alike, residents said.
Police were told he immigrated to the United States 17 years ago, had a 13-year-old daughter and a listed address in Marysville, though he also lived in the East Bay. Singh was a Sikh and was wearing his turban on the day of his death, police said.
