Gwinnett County Police homicide detectives have charged a 16-year-old with the murder of an elderly Dacula woman Friday.
James Watkins has been charged with the murder of 77-year-old Margaret Sheffield. Corporal Michele Pihera of the Gwinnett County Police Department said family members found Sheffield dead in her Dacula home on Friday. Neighbors said they knew her as "Maw Maw." Detectives said it appears the motive for the the murder was theft.
Police say there was large amount of blood at the scene, and authorities are treating the death as a homicide. Sheffield lived alone at the home, and her injuries are not likely to be consistent with a fall, police said. There was no sign of forced entry.
Detectives determined that the woman was last seen about 24 hours prior to the discovery of her body.
“Right now we don’t know. The medical examiner is going to look in to a lot of things - medicaions that she’s on, her past medical history, but we are also going to look at the injuries that are on her, whether they are stab wounds or just an assault. All of that is going to come in to play and give us a better answer of how she died," Pihera said.
The teen is being charged with felony murder, aggravated assault and burglary.
