Three people are being held without bond in the Talladega County Metro Jail in connection with the shooting death of Joseph Sean Herrington last weekend.
Joey Wesley Wheatt, 33; Marcus Sharone Smoot, 31; and Khiry Demon McKinney, 23; are each charged with one count of capital murder by shooting into an occupied dwelling from outside it. Wheatt and McKinney are also facing unrelated charges.
McKinney was arrested on a capital murder warrant, interviewed by police investigators and then taken to the jail, Kelly said.
He was handcuffed, but when the officer let go of him to buzz them into the booking area, McKinney attempted to flee.
He was able to run out the gate onto Renfroe Road, where he was cut off by a sheriff’s deputy.
He then ducked into a wooded area but tripped, fell and was apprehended without further incident or use of force. While he was running, McKinney was yelling for the officers to kill him, Kelly added, McKinney is now facing felony escape charges as well.
