A 30-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder of a woman whose body was found in a burned car last month in New Orleans East, police say.
Thayon Samson was taken into custody on Monday for one count of second-degree murder, according to the New Orleans Police Department.
New Orleans investigators say Samson is a suspect in the death of Lindsay Nichols, who was found the morning of June 21 in the truck of her burned car at the intersection of Lake Forest and Michoud boulevards.
According to the NOPD, Samson's arrest comes after detectives gathered cellphone records and DNA evidence from the burned car. Investigators said Nichols left a nightclub the night before to meet up with Samson.
"Witnesses and anonymous tipsters told detectives that they saw someone matching Samson's description standing at the open trunk of Nichol's car," the NOPD said in a news release.
The NOPD said an arrest warrant was issued for Samson for second-degree murder. He was tracked down at a tattoo shop Monday in the 4100 block of Washington Avenue. He was arrested without incident by New Orleans officers.
Nichols' family spoke to WDSU in June, and said the 31-year-old mother had gone out with friends the night before after moving into her new home in Des Allemands. When her friends were ready to leave, Nichols wanted to stay out longer. She was found dead the next morning.
“This is what I can’t get past, is the fact that she was murdered. It's unfathomable,” Jolene Dufrene said. “That doesn't happen to people. It's not supposed to … It's like something that you don't think is going to happen to you. It's something you see on TV. It's not real.”
Dufrene saw images of her daughter’s burned car on the Internet. She soon got word that police had found her daughter’s body burned in the trunk of her car.
Nichols died from a gunshot wound, the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office said.
Nichols left behind a 9-year-old son, Peter Rose Jr. Family members said Rose will be cared for by his grandparents.
Samson is being held at the Orleans Parish Prison in lieu of a $2.5 million bond. He appeared in magistrate court Tuesday and is set to return to court in August.
