A search warrant document reveals a homicide victim's hands were soaking in bowls of bleach when his body was found in his Sheboygan Avenue apartment.

Larry Ewing,76, was found in his apartment in the 5000 block of Sheboygan Ave. on April 18.

Authorities said the man's neighbor noticed newspapers outside of Ewing's apartment and decided to check on him. According to the search warrant, the door was unlocked and the neighbor entered Ewing's apartment and found him deceased.

The neighbor told police that the last time he saw Ewing alive was on April 15 at approximately 10 a.m.

Police said Ewing was lying face down in the living room/bedroom area of the apartment and both of his hands were submerged in separate bowls of clear liquid. A bleach bottle was also located near Ewing's body. According to the document, an autopsy revealed that the condition of Ewing's hands appeared consistent with extended bleach exposure.

According to the search warrant, multiple drawers inside Ewing's apartment were opened and it appeared that items from within the drawers had been removed and were scattered on the floor.

On April 21, police talked to a friend of Ewing who said the authorities should investigate Ewing's connection with an individual who had been recently incarcerated, according to the document. The friend also told police that he believed Ewing had communicated with the man while the man was still incarcerated.

Police checked jail phone records and found that Ewing's phone number had been called multiple times by Dennis Hassel, who was an inmate of the Dane County Jail at that time.

According to the search warrant, a detective saw a calendar in Ewing's apartment and noticed there was an entry on the calendar on March 3 stating, "Dennis Birthday." The detective noted Hassel's birthday is March 3, 1960.

Authorities contacted a parole agent from the State of Wisconsin Department of Corrections Probation, who told police Hassel was on parole supervision after serving a prison sentence for sexual assault. The parole agent told police that Hassel was outfitted with a GPS monitoring unit on his ankle as a part of his supervision.

According to the search warrant, detectives viewed the GPS map that plots Hassel's location, and observed that on April 15, Hassel's GPS unit was located outside Ewing's apartment building at 9:43 a.m., and inside the building at 9:44 a.m.

The detective said it appears that Hassel's GPS unit remained inside the building until 12:01 p.m. on April 15, and re-entered briefly, and exited again at 12:16 p.m.

The GPS unit indicates Hassel arrived at the intersection of Williamson Street and North Baldwin Avenue at approximately 2:13 p.m. A detective said it appears Hassel entered Rick's Olde Gold, a resale shop.

According to the document, Hassel returned to Ewing's apartment building at approximately 4:49 p.m. and stayed there for about 10 minutes.

On April 22, Hassel was arrested on a probation hold. He is currently in the custody of the City of Madison Police Department.

Authorities said records show that on April 15, Hassel sold a silver bracelet and two watches to Rick's Olde Gold. A photo of the items was taken and the detective observed that one of the watches Hassel sold had a distinctive blue face. The document states Hassel was given $50 for the items.

A detective spoke with a longtime friend of Ewing, who stated she had lunch with Ewing on April 14. The detective asked the friend if Ewing was wearing any jewelry on April 14 and she stated that Ewing was wearing a gold watch and silver link bracelet with inlaid stones.

On April 22, Ewing's friend provided the detective with a photo of Ewing. The detective observed that Ewing was wearing a gold colored watch with a blue face. According to the search warrant, the detective states that the watch in the photograph is consistent in appearance with one of the watches Hassel sold to Rick's Olde Gold on April 15.
