Two San Diego Fire-Rescue firefighters were stabbed by a man Wednesday afternoon during a medical-aid call in the East Village, authorities reported.
The assailant pulled a knife or similar weapon and attacked the emergency personnel shortly before 4 p.m. as they were trying to treat a patient for some sort of ailment at 600 Market St., according to the San Diego Police Department.
The firefighters were each stabbed more than once, SDFR spokesperson Lee Swanson confirmed.
An ambulance crew took the firefighters to hospitals -- one to UC San Diego Medical Center, the other to Scripps Mercy Hospital. According to Swanson, they remained hospitalized Thursday in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.
Police had a suspect in custody shortly after the assault, SDPD Officer Humberto Hernandez said. The suspect was identified Friday as 34-year-old Ryan Allen Jones. The firefighters' names were not released.
As the suspected attacker was loaded into an ambulance, he told 10News he stabbed the firefighters because he was being kicked. Witnesses or law enforcement did not confirm the suspected attacker's account.
Jones was booked on two counts of attempted murder and one count each of felony use of a dangerous or deadly weapon and causing great bodily injury. He also faces one misdemeanor count of obstructing or resisting an officer.
