Obabiyi Aishah from Nigeria was crowned World Muslimah 2013, the beauty pageant exclusively for Muslim women, on September 18th, 2013 at the Sarbini Hall, Plaza Semanggi in Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital. Obabiyi Aishah Ajibola, 21, is a student of the University of Lagos. She’s a motivational speaker in such dakwah events at her home town with Muslim Student Society of Nigeria (MSSN).
Her court includes the first runner-up Noor Aspasia from Indonesia, the second runner-up Evawani Efliza, also from Indonesia.
According to Eka Shanti, the founder of the pageant who lost her job as TV news anchor three year ago for refusing to remove her headscarf, this beauty pageant is the “Islam’s answer to Miss World”, which is underway in Indonesia.
“This year we deliberately held our event just before the Miss World final to show that there are alternative role models for Muslim women,” said Eka.
Despite showing respect for Indonesia culture, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country, by using sarong instead of bikini for the much-awaited Beach Beauty fast-track of the competition, groups of Islamic radicals still held quite a few protest against the pageant.
Under the strong protest of the Islam community, the Indonesian government decided to move the finale of the pageant, initially scheduled for the capital city of Jakarta, to Hindu-majority Bali, where it opened on September 8.
